Chapter 7

A Birthday Surprise and a Bad News

A few days had past very quickly; the little girls were planning to throw a BIG surprise birthday party for Xylia. Becca and I wanted to make something special for her on her birthday. That afternoon, when Ms.Miratone was not in, Becca, the girls and I chatted excitedly about the secret birthday plan that we are going to make for Xylia. This was what we discussed about:-

Micol: So, who is going to buy the balloons??( looking at one another)

Allyson: I’ll buy. ( raising up her hand)

Micol: Who will be decorating this house??

Fran: Becca and I will. But please somebody must take Xylia out, so that she won’t be able to find out about her birthday party, it’s going to be a secret remember?

Heidi: Oh, this will not be a problem, Sis Fran. I can take Sis Xylia out of the house and bring her somewhere else. (volunteered to bring Xylia)

Micol: Okay, everything is clear now. Let’s get ready before Ms.Miratone comes back and take us out for a walk.

Girls: Okay.

Micol turned to Becca and me) you both better make the house beautiful with the decorations. (smiling cheerfully)

Fran: Oh, Micol don’t worry about that… Becca and I can do it perfectly. We promise. Leave it to us.

Micol: Oh, we need to run before Ms.Miratone comes back to take the girls and me out. Bye Becca! Bye Fran!

Fran&Becca: Bye Micol. Hope you will have a great time.

The girls dressed up and haven’t stopped talking about the birthday party that they planned. Jocelin heard every single word they said. She was really jealous because the girls had never thrown a birthday party for her.

Jocelin Why do they treat her so well than me?)

Becca and I went back to our room to find some beautiful cloth to make something special for Xylia.

Becca: Well this new pillow has been here with me for many months but I had never use it before.( starring at my big brown eyes) Should I give her with the pillow case that I will be sewing later??

Fran: Becca, that’s a great idea. You will make her a pillow case and I will make her a pencil box.

(An hour later)

Fran shouted) Yay! I finally finished this pencil box, hope that Xylia will like it Becca, will she?

Becca looking surprise) Wow, Fran it is really nice. It has Xylia’s name on it. You are so creative, I’m sure Xylia would be able to appreciate it because she is from India, remember? It’ll remind her of India because people there love to do handcraft.

Fran looking at Becca pillow case) have you finished making the pillow case??

Becca still sewing) a little bit more to go. Just a few more stitches than it will be done. See is done now. Isn’t it lovely? (beaming at her hard work)

Fran: Hey, it is the story that Xylia told the girls. The high mountain, the deep blue sea and whatever more. It’s India. (looking at Becca) You are a genius Becca.

Becca blushing) I hope that she would like it very much.

Fran: Come on, Becca. Let’s go downstairs and decorate the house. I need to practice my singing before Ms.Miratone and girls come back.

Becca: Let’s go.

We grabbed everything that we can find and think of, to decorate the house. Becca and I decorate for two hours and we are happy that it is really beautiful. Then there, I started playing the piano and started practicing the birthday song in which I want sing for Xylia. I played a totally different tune from the original birthday song tune. Becca sat beside me and listened happily. A few minutes later, the girls came back and Xylia was blind folded when she came into the house.

Once they took out the cloth from Xylia’s eyes, we all shouted “HAPPY BIRTHDAY< XYLIA”

Xylia was really surprised that everyone remembered her birthday.

Xylia: Thanks, guys. I really appreciate it a lot... (giving every one a hug except for Jocelin who didn’t want to receive a hug from her.)

Fran started singing while playing the piano) Happy Birthday to you,

                                                                                    Happy Birthday to you,

                                                                                     Happy Birthday dear Xylia,

                                                                                     Happy Birthday to you.

I’m happy to have a friend like you,

I’m happy to have a friend like you,

                                                                                     Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday,

                                                                                     Happy Birthday dear Xylia.

Xylia: Thank for your wonderful singing Fran. I love it .

Fran: You are welcome, your highness (bowing low)

Xylia laughing) Hahahhahaa, Fran. You are so cute. (the girls started laughing too)

Fran: Thanks for saying me cute. Everyone of us are cute.

Becca, Xylia, the girls and I were playing around the area and not for long a man came. The man told Ms.Miratone that Xylia’s father had passed away during the recent war. After she hear the bad news, Ms.Miratone, stopped the party. She told all of us to go upstairs and have asked Xylia to stay back.

Ms.Miratone shouting at her sister) Aria! Please take a black dress for Xylia.

Aria: What a black dress? What for??

Ms.Miratone: Don’t ask so much. Just do what I tell you to. (flashing an angry look at her sister)

Aria: Okay1 As you wish, Patricia.

Ms.Miratone turned to Xylia) I’m sorry to tell you that your father had passed away in the war.

Xylia: What??? No……no….no…..it can’t be. (tears filled her eyes)

Ms.Miratone: And for now since both of your parents had passed away, you are going to be a little servant girl that obey my commands and all your belongings will belong to me from now on, even your locket. (pulls Xylia’s locket away from her neck)

Now, follow me to your new room upstairs and you will meet two little servant girls living there too.

Xylia keep quiet along the way)

Ms.Miratone: You have to wake up early to make our breakfast. (said rudely)

Ms.Miratone went off and leaves Xylia in the scary room. Xylia drew a big circle on the floor and lied down in the big circle, crying bitterly. Becca and I went her room to give her presents we made especially for her. I saw her crying bitterly and I felt very sorry for her.

Fran: Xylia, please don’t cry. Here are two gifts from Becca and me for your birthday.

Xylia wiping her tears) Thanks Fran and Becca

Becca: You are most welcome. We hope you like these gifts.

Xylia: Of course I like your gifts.

Fran: I’m sorry to hear about your dad’s death, you must be very sad about it.

Becca: Me too.

Xylia kept quiet while tears flowed down her cheeks)

Fran: You know what, Xylia. My foster parents had passed away too. So we are in the same boat and I know how you feel during this period of time. Becca don’t have parents too.

Xylia: You have foster parents??? Why where are your real parents??
Fran: My real parents had sold me to my foster parents. And I don’t really know who my real parents are or how many brothers or sisters I have.

Xylia: That means your life is worst than me?

Becca: Yes, Xylia. Not worst than you but around the same fate as you.

Fran: So, cheer up Xylia, everything is going to be fine. It might be a bit hard to do this kind of duty but soon you will be used to it. (smiling at Xylia)

Xylia: Okay! I’ll try my best to get use in this freaky room that I have now. (laughing)

Fran&Becca started laughing too)

Fran: Okay, we better get to bed now. For tomorrow we will be another busy day for us. Need to get up early and go buy some stuff from the morning market.

Becca yawning) Yah, I’m really tired today with all the work I had done.

Xylia: You both better get into your rooms and sleep.

Fran an idea pops-up from my head) Why not we three sleep together so that we can wake each other up the next morning?

Becca: Hey, that’s a great idea. (jumping on the shrieking bed) Why not we have a bedtime story or bedtime singing?

Xylia: Why not bedtime singing??

Fran: What song are we going to sing??

Becca: Why not our favorite song, Fran??

Fran: We have a lot of favorite songs, Becca. Which song do you want?? (looking at Xylia) Well, we have a guest here so we should let her pick a song that she like the most.

Xylia: How about “My Favorite Things” from the Sound of Music?

Fran: You love the songs from “The Sound of Music”?? That’s great they are my entire favorite too.

Becca: Fran, please sing it to us.

Fran: Okay. (started singing)  Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens,

Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens,

Brown paper packages tied up with strings,

These are the few of my favorite things.

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels,

Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles,

Wild geese that fly with the moon of their wings,

These are a few of my favorite things.

(Becca & Xylia joins in)   When the dog bites,

                                                       When the bee stings,

                                                       When I’m feeling sad,

I simply remember my favorite things and then I don’t feel so bad.

Fran, Becca and Xylia laughs)

Xylia: What a great song. This song is really my favorite.

Fran: This song is actually a very meaningful song. It says that even when we are sad we just remember our favorite things and so that we won’t feel so bad.

Becca: Since, we are in this condition now. We ought to be happy that at least we have a place where there is shelter to get out of the rain.

Xylia: Yah, we are ought to be thankful to God who has granted us this kind of room eventhough it is a dusty, dirty and freaky room.

Fran: Okay, my friend time for bed. Tomorrow will be another busy day, so, we need some rest.

Becca: Okay, good night everyone.

Fran&Xylia: Good night, Becca.

We had ended the conversation and peacefully sleeping. I couldn’t sleep that night because I was wondering how to my parents look like. I really wanted to meet them and I wish that I know the address. My foster parents once told me that my Korean parents are living in Korea but they never said which part of Korea. North or south or east or west, how I wish I could meet them soon but I’m still angry with my parents. I wonder why they sold me away to my foster parents. I just really don’t know what my life is going to be when I grow up to be an adult. I hope that someday my dreams to be a star will come true. Okay, I have to stop talking nonsensical stuff and get some sleep. Tomorrow will be a very…… very…. busy day. Goodnight everyone, sweet dreams.
